В альбом включены только произведения, принадлежащие Государственному Русскому музею, представлены характерные для разных исторических периодов образцы, позволяющие видеть в русской портретной миниатюре самостоятельную национальную школу • Издание состоит из двух томов (частей). Обе части содержат таблицы с репродукциями и каталог произведений. Нумерация таблиц и нумерация произведений в каталоге для каждой части самостоятельны. Расположение таблиц в альбоме в основном придерживается хронологической последовательности. Произведения одного автора даются совокупно и расположены по хронологии. Миниатюры воспроизводятся в величину оригинала или в уменьшенном размере; в последнем случае на это указывается в подписи к таблице
