The Lost Library. The Legacy of Vilna's Strashun Library in the Aftermath of the Holocaust Rabinowitz Dan Libri

The Strashun Library was among the most important Jewish public institutions in Vilna, and indeed in Eastern Europe, prior to it's destruction during World War II. Mattityahu Strashun, a man descended from a long and distinguished line of rabbis, bequeathed his extensive personal library of 5,753 volumes to the Vilna Jewish community upon his death in 1885, with instructions that it remain open to all • In the summer of 1941, the Nazis came to Vilna, plundered the library, and shipped many of it's books to Germany for deposition at a future "Institute for the Study of the Jewish Question". When the war ended, the recovery effort began. Against all odds, a number of the greatest treasures of the library could be traced. However, owing to it's diverse holdings and it's many prewar patrons, a custody battle erupted over the remaining holdings

The third volume of Peter Hennessy's landmark postwar history of Britain • Harold Macmillan - the presiding figure in Peter Hennessy's magnificent new history - famously said in 1960 that the wind of change was blowing over Africa and the remaining British Empire. But it was blowing over Britain too - its society; its relationship with Europe; its nuclear and defence policy. And where it was not blowing hard enough - the United Kingdom's economy - great efforts were made to wipe away the cobwebs of old industrial practices and poor labour relations. Life was lived in the knowledge that it could end in a single afternoon of thermonuclear exchange if the uneasy, armed peace of the Cold War tipped into a third world war. As with his acclaimed histories of British life in the two previous decades, Never Again and Having it so Good, Peter Hennessy explains the political, economic, cultural and social aspects of a nation with inimitable wit and empathy

Only an incomplete typescript remains as a testimony to the conversations. The Lost, Last Words of Mies van der Rohe presents this text in it's entirety for the very first time.
