In the 1920s, an unprecedented program of architectural and cultural renewal was established in the German city of Frankfurt am Main. This scheme became inscribed in cultural history under the name "The New Frankfurt". Under the city's lord mayor, Ludwig Landmann, and the head of the municipal planning and building control office, Ernst May, modernity as a way of life took shape there: As part of the housing and urban development initiative decided in 1925, more than 10,000 new residential units were planned. Despite the fact that he shaped Venice and it's contemporary form, Eugenio Miozzi remains a little-known figure. Yet both locals and visitors experience his legacy every day, in particular when they cross his bridges: from the Ponte della Libertà, to the Ponte dell'Accademia; from the various bridges over the Rio Nuovo, to the exemplary Ponte degli Scalzi. Miozzi, chief engineer of the Commune of Venice from 1931 to 1954, carried out a large number of works and projects, including a vast modernist parking garage and the Casino on the Lido. The prolific engineer-architect played a role in the development of the Teatro La Fenice, made plans for the restoration of the city and the extension of the Tronchetto, and designed a translagoon road and a motorway from Venice to Munich

The "new urban municipality of Berlin", also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city's area increased from 66 to 878 square metres, it's population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity.
